If someone told you that the future of the human race depended on our using more solar energy, you might think that they were crazy. If that were the case, then surely the politicians would be making more fuss about it, surely there would not be objections on aesthetic ground to sites being created, not if it is so important. However, through applying a little bit of logic, we can see that it is actually that important.

Most of the energy that we are using to run the economy at the moment comes from sources that were formed over millions of years. Things like coal and oil come from dead plant matter, in the most part, which in certain places in the Earth’s crust came under very specific conditions which created these substances. Of course this is likely to be an ongoing process, but the question is whether we are using it faster than it is being created. The answer to that, of course, is that we are. This means that it is going to run out one day, and if that happens before we have renewable energy sources in place, like solar power, then the economy and by extension the world population, will not be sustainable. When history looks back on this period, they will probably say that we are already living in the age of the oil wars.

The only way that we can avoid the problems caused by using non-renewable energy is by transitioning quickly to renewable energy. At the moment the most popular and widely used of this kind of energy of is solar power. This comes in the form of solar panels.

The way that solar panels are constructed is that they are formed of a collection of solar cells. To form a lot of energy, you can put the PV panels together as well, and make a solar farm. Or they can make solar cells which are actually extremely small, and they can be put in pocket devices, like calculators. The way that individuals can most effectively get involved, however, is by getting the ones that go on the roof of your house, so that you can power your home.

It might not seem as if you are making much of a difference on your own by getting solar panels for your roof. Actually though, you are exercising true democratic power, you are literally and figuratively taking the power for yourself and changing the world one little piece at a time. It is all any of us can do, and it is the only way that the world changes. Don’t think of yourself as being on your own though, you can connect to all of the other people that have done the same thing.

The reason that everyone has not already had a solar installation, however, is the expense. To have solar panels installed on your roof is quite expensive. That’s why the government has introduced a scheme whereby you actually get money paid to you for the energy you produce with your solar cells. Not only will you be making the savings on your electricity bill then, you’ll also be making extra money. This makes them more profitable, and a more viable financial investment.

It might not seem right to be talking about financial matters when the future of the human race is at stake, but actually it is when the financial matters are sorted out that everything else will follow. We cannot only be concerned with our future, because we have to be able to eat and drink today as well, or else the future will be destroyed even sooner. When solar energy becomes as cheap as oil or coal, that is when it will be able to save the Earth.

There is of course much more that can be said about solar energy, it is a very dynamic and ever growing energy resource. Its main advantages are that it is versatile, meaning that it can be used in many places, and that it is clean and safe. Most importantly, however, it is renewable which means that we’ll never run out of solar power. Also, if you are looking for a financial investment that will also benefit the Earth and everyone else, you can do no better that getting solar panels for your own home.
