Solar Power
It is difficult to argue against solar panels being the most important of the technologies that we as a species have developed. Without energy of course, none of the other technologies we have would work, and solar energy is totally clean and renewable. This means that solar power has many advantages of using fossil fuels.
Global Warming
By now, just about everyone knows why solar cells are so important. It’s because of the damage that we are doing by burning fossil fuels to get our energy. What this is doing is creating a problem of global warming, which it’s important to stop as soon as possible.
The way that the problem of global warming has come about is from our pumping many tonnes of CO2 in to the atmosphere. We have been doing that since the beginning of the industrial revolution because we suddenly needed a lot more energy. And as carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, it means that it makes the Earth warmer.
What the consequences of global warming are going to be nobody can say for sure. However some serious scientists have made some predictions that sound more like science fiction. Things like the polar ice caps melting, leading to much of what is now land being engulfed by water.
One of the claims that is being made about climate change is that we may be approaching, or even have gone past, a tipping point after which we won’t be able to avoid some of the consequences of global warming. However if we are going to avoid these things, then we are going to have to start using solar panels so that we get our energy from solar power rather than fossil fuels.
Why Renewable Energy Is Important
There is another reason that we have got to start using renewable energy though, although this is more of a long term concern (it is hoped). That is that fossil fuels are, of course, non-renewable forms of energy, meaning that they will run out one day. When that happens, we are going to need an alternative.
Again, the alternative form of energy that we are going to have to use to avoid this problem is renewable energy. And of all the forms that we have available, the most promising is solar energy. That’s because it is so versatile, solar panels can be put just about anywhere. All we really need now is for them to produce more solar power.
Making The Transition
These are relatively new forms of technology though still, and they are not yet powerful enough or cheap enough to be able to take over from fossil fuels. The only worry now then, is that they technology will not improve fast enough to be able to avoid the problems that we are facing from the fossil fuels that we’re using.
Governments around the world, including the UK government, have been trying to speed up this transition though by making renewable energy more economically viable. The way this is being done, for the most part, is with the feed in tariff.
The point of the feed in tariff is to make solar energy in to a better investment. So you don’t get any help with the initial installation costs but once you have the solar panels on your roof you get paid for every unit of solar power that you produce. And this has been effective in increasing the number of people getting solar installations.
The time when renewable energy is really going to be able to take over from fossil fuels for good is when they are cheaper than using conventional energy without government assistance. At that point we will see quite a fast transition, and we can only hope that this occurs quickly enough to deal with the problem of global warming.
